La profe de español – capitulo dos
For
homework, read chapters three and four.
Oh oh! I’ve
used the imperative form of the verb ir. When giving a command, or telling
people to do something, the verb changes …
Tú ve, pero tú no vayas
Usted vaya y usted no vaya
Nos vamos, pero nos no vayamos
Vos id, pero vos no vayáis
Ustedes vayan y ustedes
(ellos y ellas) no vayan
Vaya
can also be
used to tell someone to go away..
I tell my
dog: ve a tu cesta (go to your basket) and I
tell her: ven aca (come here). Compare the verb
to the sentences:
My dog goes
to her basket - Mi perro va a su cesta
My dog comes here - Mi perro viene aca
¡Ella entiende español mucho mejor cuando tengo
una galleta en mi mano!
We will keep
dropping in the imperative tense from time to time.
Listening
exercises
There’s a
new verb for us – dejar (to allow). Déjame pensar means “let me think”. It’s
useful for buying some time. You can also say déjame ver (let me see), déjame
saber (let me know).
a) Hmm … Déjame pensar. A Arequipa puede ir en
avión, en tren o en autobús. Hay varios vuelos diarios desde Lima. El vuelo
dura una hora y cuarto aproximadamente. En autobús se tarda entre dieciséis y
veinte horas.
Hmm, let me
think. You can go to Arequipa by plane, train or bus. There are several daily
flights from Lima. The flight lasts about an hour and a quarter. By bus it
takes between sixteen and twenty hours.
b)
Oh yes, you
can go to Cuzco by plane, train or bus. There are two daily flights from Lima;
the flight lasts one hour. If you want to go by train, you have to go first to
Arequipa and from Arequipa take the train to Cuzco. The train ride from
Arequipa to Cuzco takes about sixteen hours.
You can go
to Machu Picchu by bus or train from Cuzco and it takes about four hours. You
can also go on foot taking the Inca Trail.
noventa minutos.
If you
prefer to go to Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, you have to take a plane. It is
the only way to get from Lima. The flight lasts ninety minutes.
Listening
exercise with Lucía.
Fuimos a Bournemouth
No conocimos muchos
Two weeks ago I went on a short trip with my family:
my husband, my two children, Julia and Aureliano and me.
We did not know where to go and did not have much
time, so we decided not to fly out of the country but to travel by car. We went
to Bournemouth because there is a nice sandy beach and also a fair with games
and carousel.
The carousels are the favourite of my daughter Julia
at the moment. We were in a pretty Victorian hotel near the centre, we ate good
meals in an authentic Mexican restaurant and the kids had lots of ice cream.
We did not know many historical places, but we did
visit almost all the parks with playgrounds.
The last day we went to Portsmouth to visit my
friends Lamorna and Morwenna. We took a babyccino on the beach with them while
we watched the boats go to Old Portsmouth. We had a lot of fun, but we returned
more tired than at the beginning.
1. Where has Lucía been?
2.
Who
did she go with?
3.
How
did she get there?
4.
What
is Julia’s favourite thing to do at the moment?
5.
Where
did they eat?
6. Where did they go on their
last day?
The present tense is used for the following
1. An action or state of
being at the present time.
a. Hablo español – I speak Spanish
b. Estoy muy triste – I am very sad
2. A habitual action.
a.
Voy a la biblioteca todos los días – I go to the library every day.
3. To express facts or general
truths.
a.
Seis menos dos son cuatro – six minus two is four
b.
4. Vividness (or a
commentary) when talking about past events. Frequently used in writing.
a. El asesino se pone
pálido. Tiene miedo. Sale de la casa y corre a lo largo del río. The
murderer turns pale. He is afraid. He goes out of the house and runs
along the river.
5. A near future.
a.
Mi hermano llega mañana. My brother arrives tomorrow.
b. ¿Escuchamos un
disco ahora? Shall we listen to a record now?
6. An action that occurred in
the past and continues up to the present. A native Spanish speaker will use the
present tense of a verb with hace, which is also in the present. This is used
in the same way as the Present Perfect tense. Examples would be:
a. Hace tres horas que miro la televisión. I have been watching television for three hours.
b. Hace treinta minutos
que espero un autobús. I have been waiting for a bus for 30 minutes.
He
estado viendo televisión durante tres horas.
He
estado esperando un autobús por 30 minutos.
7. Finally, when using por
poco to say almost or nearly:
a.
Por poco me mata. It almost killed me.
b. Por poco él choca
el coche. He almost hit the car.
Present Continuous.
Describes and action that is happening. Use estar
plus the gerund of the verb. Por ejemplo:
I am talking – estoy hablando
We are eating – estamos
comiendo
We are selling our house – estamos vendiendo nuestra casa.
In Spanish, the present continuous is used less
frequently than in English, where we use it all the time.
Mi Gente
Mi
Gente" is a reworking of Willy William's previous single "Voodoo
Song". It topped the charts in most Latin American countries and, in the
US, it peaked at number two on the Hot
Latin Songs chart.
J
Balvin and Willy William dropped six additional "Mi
Gente" remixes with various artists.
The
accompanying music video premiered on the same day of the single
release. Billboard magazine described the video as "an explosion of colour
and dance" and it features people from around the globe and that is all
about unifying through music. It has many cameo appearances, including Italian
millionaire Gianluca Vacchi.
The music
video has over 2.3 billion views on YouTube as of March 2019, making it
the 22nd most viewed video on the site. Beyonce famously recorded a
version of the song and donated all profits to hurricane relief in Mexico and
the Caribbean.
Chapter 10
Listen to
this conversation in Spanish. Alberto is at the railway station in Madrid.
Listen to the conversation and then say whether the statements on Page 108 are
true or false (verdadero o falso). Let’s look at those
statements.
Buenos días
¡Hola!

Note that
Alberto uses the phrase “se puede” instead of “puedo”. This is a common phrase
and it means “can one?” or “one can”. It can often be seen on signs to tell you
what cannot be done – No se puede fumar.
Does anyone
know why he uses the phrase: Quiero que me dé
información?
This is the
subjunctive form of the verb. We have come across it before. It is used when
there’s an element of doubt and when expressing a wish or desire. In this case
you want someone to do something for you.
