I have some new location words for you this morning. You will
have seen a couple before. Let’s go through them now and then we’re going to
practise them with a children’s book that might be familiar to you.
dónde = where
dentro de = inside
debajo de = under
detrás de = behind
sobre = above
en frente de = in front of
al lado de = at the side of
en = on
en = in
Before we do that, I want to talk about apocopation. This is
something that helps us say words more easily.
Instead of saying: está dentro de el armario, we change de el to del. Está dentro del armario. We can
also use it for a and el,
which changes to al. Vamos
al aeropuerto.
It only works for masculine nouns. Feminine nouns (la) have it
written in full.
Está detras de la puerta … vamos a la tienda.
Apocopation is good gramar and should be used. Sometimes, the
Spanish merge words to save time when speaking or to make it easier. Por ejemplo: dónde está or
mi hija. There’s lots of apocopation coming up:
¡Vaya! is an exclamation. It can mean Oh no! Well! Or Wow! You
will also hear it in expressions such as:
¡vaya! ¡tú por aquí! – Fancy seeing
you here
¡vaya amigo! - some friend he is!
¡vaya hombre! – can you believe it?
The verb probar means to taste
or to test. Do you remember, one of last week’s jobs (in the afternoon class) was
a probador del software. No ha probado is the perfect tense: he has not tasted … we would
say: he has not touched his dinner.
La semana pasada, nos hicimos muchas
preguntas.
Hicimos is the past tense of the verb hacer (to do or to
make). It’s the ‘nosotros’ or ‘we’ conjugation.
Why do we use hacer? In Spanish, the questioning verbs have a
more precise meaning.
Preguntar - to inquire ¿Puedo preguntarte la hora? (Can I
ask the time?)
Pedir - to request Voy a pedirle que se case conmigo cuando estemos en Hawai. (I am
going to ask her to marry me in Hawaii).
Inviter – to invite Requiere valentía invitar a la chica más popular de la
escuela al baile. (It requires courage to ask the most
popular girl in school to the dance).
Demonstration:
Les presento a Lucía.
Ella es de Ecuador y nació en
Quito, la ciudad capital.
Lucía está casada y su marido
es mi hijo Tom (ella es mi nuera).
Ellos tienen dos hijos, Julia
y Aureliano.
Lucía estudia antropología en
Cambridge y
además, ha estudiado en Lima,
Bruselas y LSE en Londres.
Su padre y su madre son médicos en
Ecuador.
Ella tiene tres hermanas – Emilia, Arlen
y Camilla.
We are now on Sueños 3
We are still building on
our Spanish conversation. We now want to be able to describe the place where we
live.
City – la ciudad

Our
song this week was going to be Guantanamera, but I’ve made a quick change. Who
is watching Strictly Come Dancing?
On
Saturday night Dr Ranj Singh and Jeanette Manrara performed a paso doble to the
song Canción del mariachi. Did
anyone see it? Did anyone understand the words?
Let’s
watch the video.
Now
here are the words and a translation. It’s quite a macho song.
Here’s
the link to Strictly: https://youtu.be/5t18MEeIdro
And
this is Antonio Banderas’ version: https://youtu.be/cBpPl3HDlX0
Verb of the week: ir
Ir means 'to go' and it is one of the most useful verbs in
Spanish. It can also be used as a simple way to form sentences in the future
tense.
In English, we tend to use the present continuous tense - the appropriate
conjugation of the verb 'to be' (I am, he is, they are, you are) plus the
gerund 'going'. Rarely do we say “I go to the shops”, we say “I am going to the
shops”.
In English, there are only two conjugations in the present
tense:
he/she/it goes
I/you/we/they
go
In the past tense, there is only one form of the verb: went.
Of course, in Spanish, there's a full set:
Present Preterite
yo voy fui
tú vas fuiste
él/ella /usted va fue
nosotros vamos fuimos
vosotros vais fuisteis
ellos/ellas/ustedes van fueron
Past participle: ido
Gerund: yendo
Examples:
Present: Vamos al
cine esta noche – we are going to the cinema tonight
Present: Me voy a
la cama – I am going to bed
Infinitive: ¿Quieres
ir conmigo? – do you want to go with me?
Infinitive: Podemos
ir al supermercado el viernes – we can go to the supermarket on Friday.
Present continuous: Estoy yendo ahora – I am going now
Perfect: He ido
allí muchas veces – I have gone there many times
Past: Fui a
Grecia el año pasado – I went to Greece last year
Past: Fuimos a
ver a mi tía ayer – we went to see my aunt yesterday
Past: ¿A dónde
fuiste de vacaciones? – where did you go on holidays?
Past and future: Fuimos
a esquiar en Francia y vamos a ir allí de nuevo en abril – we went
skiing in France and we are going to go there again in April
Future
tense
To use ir to create sentences in the future tense, use the
correct conjugation of ir in the present tense, followed by the infinitive of
the verb you want to use in the future tense. Por
ejemplo:
Voy a pagar con tarjeta – I
am going to pay by card
Vamos a ir de
compras mañana – we are going to go shopping tomorrow
¿Vas a estar aquí mañana por la noche? -
are you going to be here tomorrow night?
NB: The preterite
conjugation of ir is the same as ser.
Homework
We have learned
five essential verbs – estar, ser, querer, tener and ir. For homework translate
the following sentences into Spanish. They all use one of those five verbs and
we’ve done similar sentences in the past four weeks.
- I have to go out
tonight
- What do you want to
drink?
- Good morning madam.
How are you?
- How old is she?
- I would like more
milk please
- What colour is it?
- Do you have a
headache?
- I would like to know what time the bus leaves for Madrid
- Where are your
children this morning?
- I am cold
Quick
quiz
Let´s see what has stuck. Voy a preguntarles algunos preguntas.
No les preocupes … if you cannot answer,
you can say:
Lo siento, no lo se
No se
On a fresh sheet of
paper, write the Spanish word for each of these. You must include all
accents:
Pregunta una: Uncle – el tío
Pregunta dos: Grandchildren – los nietos
Pregunta tres: Husband – el marido
Pregunta cuatro: Grandmother – la abuela
Pregunta cinco: Sister – la hermana
Pregunta seis: Baker - el panadero
Pregunta siete: Waiter - el camarero
Pregunta ocho: Plumber - el fontanero
Pregunta nueve: Mechanic - el mecánico
Pregunta diez: Secretary - la secretaria
