Today’s video, by popular demand is Shakira Hips Don’t Lie,
although in Spanish the song is called Será Será.
Shakira was born in 1977 (so she’s now 41) in Barranquilla, a city located on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia.
Her paternal grandparents emigrated from Lebanon to New York, where her father was born. He was
taken to Colombia, aged 5.
The name Shakira is Arabic and translates as "grateful". From her mother,
she has Spanish and Italian ancestry.
Her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll and
she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies
Descalzos (Barefoot) in 1996, and her fourth album, Dónde
Están los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves) in 1998.
By 2001, she was a major name in Latin America and had sold over 10 million
albums.
Shakira
entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry
Service in 2001. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever",
became one of the most successful singles of 2002. Her success in English
continued with her sixth and seventh albums in 2005, the latter of which
spawned the best selling single of the Noughties, "Hips Don't Lie".
Her
official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for
Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time with 10
million downloads. With over 1.8 billion views, it is one of the most
viewed music videos on YouTube.
She
has four of the 20 top-selling hits of the 2000s, more than any other
artist.
Shakira
served as a coach on the American version of The Voice in
2013 and 2014. She has received numerous awards, including five MTV Video
Music Awards, three Grammies, 13 Latin Grammies, seven Billboard
Music Awards and 39 Billboard Latin Music Awards. She has a star on
the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and had sold over 125 million records
worldwide as of 2012 (over 70 million albums sold), making her the best-selling
South American singer of all time.
Her
partner is Gerard Piqué is a Spanish
professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Barcelona and the Spain
national team. They have been together for eight years and have two sons. There
are constant rumours of a split, especially in the Mail Online.
Shakira
performs charity work through her Pies Descalzos Foundation and, in 2011,
she was appointed by US President Barack Obama to his Advisory
Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. From 2012 to 2015, she was
listed among world's top 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes. In
2017, she was the only artist listed as one of the world's greatest leaders
by Fortune, ranked at 27th.
So
let’s watch the video. This video does contain strong images of a sexual
nature, do if you´re offended by such things I suggest you listen to the music
and read the lyrics. I did find the lyrics quite hard to translate and have
shied away from some of the sexual innuendo. I’ll leave you to decide if I
should have been more explicit.
