Básico Español – lección veintitrés
Buenos
compras. ¿Vamos al Corte Inglés?” sugiere su madre.
“¡Oh no!
“¿A qué hora
empieza El Amor Brujo?”
“¿Podemos tomar
el metro? ¡Estoy cansada!”
Alberto vuelve a
compras. Marta vuelve a reírse.
Love) is a ballet composed in 1914-1915 by Manuel de Falla, one of the most important Spanish
composers of the 20th century. His image appeared on Spain’s 100
pesetas banknote in 1970.
The work is
distinctively Andalusian in character with the songs in the Andalusian
Spanish dialect of
the gypsies. Wikipedia says the music contains moments
of remarkable beauty and originality; it includes the celebrated Danza ritual del fuego (Ritual Fire Dance), Canción del
fuego fatuo (Song of Wildfire or Will o’the Wisp) and the Danza del terror (Dance of Terror).
Manuel de Falla,
lived in Madrid, Paris and then Granada, until the victory by Franco in the
Spanish Civil War caused him to move to Buenos Aires in Argentina. He was
offered a large pension by Franco if he would return to Spain, but he refused.
Let’s listen to
the Ritual Fire Dance performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conducted
by Daniel Barenboim.
We have reached the end of Chapter 2 of our story.
I hope you have been paying attention. Take a look at your exercise sheet and
go through the questions.
What will you be doing for Easter? Let me tell you
about our Easter lunch.
No estoy
Barriga llena, corazon contento.
Translation:
My daughter-in-law Lucia,
who is Ecuadorian, makes a special meal on Easter Sunday.
It's called Fanesca and
contains several types of bean and corn, vegetables and spices served with
dried salt cod, also little, deep-fried pastries (called Empanadas) and
plantains.
Preparation takes some
days and careful planning. There is one type of bean which is very bitter and
has to be soaked, then boiled and cooled several times over several days in
order to make it edible.
In Ecuador, you can buy
these beans ready to put into your Fanesca, but over here they are available
only as a dried pulse, so the dish is a lot more work. The Ecuadorians also eat
a lot of corn. This is like the maize or sweet corn that we eat over here, but
the pieces of corn are much larger (as big as broad beans) and they are dropped
whole into stews or soups. The Fanesca contains a good helping of these and they
had to be imported from Ecuador (courtesy of Nidia, Lucy's mother).
We eat this on Easter
Sunday and it is very good (also very filling). I'm not sure I liked the salt
cod (first time I'd had it), but the rest was delicious. It was also the first time
I'd eaten plantains (which are like large bananas, but taste like potato when
eaten raw). These were shallow fried and floated on the soup, along with the
Empanadas and sliced, hard-boiled egg.
Now we are on Chapter 9
of Sueños. In this chapter, we will:
- Learn
to ask people what they like doing and say what you like doing
- Talk
about dates
- Say
how you celebrate festivals and memorable days
- We
will also revise ordering drinks and snacks
To ask what a person
likes to do, you can say, por ejemplo: ¿Qué te gusta
hacer los domingos? What do you like doing on Sundays? Note the question
was in the informal. If it was formal how would you say it?
To answer, you can say: Me gusta … (I like to …)
Por ejemplo:
Me gusta
descansar (I like to rest)
Me gusta estar
con mis amigos (I like being with my friends)
If you like doing
something a lot, you can say: me gusta mucho …
Por ejemplo: Me gusta mucho ir al parque (I like going to the park
very much)
If you love doing
something, you can say: me encanta …
Por ejemplo: Me encanta ir al
cine (I love going to the cinema)
If you don´t like something,
you can say: no me gusta …
Por ejemplo: no me gusta ir al
cine (I don’t like going to the cinema)
To add extra emphasis,
you can say: no me gusta nada …
Here are some things you
might enjoy doing:
Leer – to read
Ver películas – watch films
Cocinar – cook
Escribir – to write
Nadar
Ir al bar – go to the pub (ir al teatro, ir al cine)
Pasear – take a walk
Pasear al perro
Correr – to run
Ir al gimnasio
Ejercitar
Jugar fútbol, tenis, golf, rugby, baloncesto (basketball)
Tocar la guitarra, piano, violín, flauta
Pintar
Hornear pasteles
Ir de compras
Have we missed anything? We have:
Tejer - to knit
Coser - to sew
Bordar - to embroider
Let’s practice those
sentences (go round class, one asks the next person the question, the other
answers).
We can also say what other
people like, or not like, doing:
Le gusta ir al teatro. That could be he or she
likes going to the theatre. How would be say she likes to go to the theatre?
A ella le gusta ir al teatro.
A él le gusta ir al teatro.
You can also use that
sentence construction to be more emphatic about what you like:
A mí me gusta leer, pero a él no le gusta.
Or for named people:
Rosita is looking for a
boyfriend (novio) and written this on her dating app profile … which of the
three boys who responded would she be likely to choose?
Tengo diecinueve años. Soy una persona muy activa. En mí
tiempo libre me gusta mucho salir.
¡Hola Rosa! Mira, soy Pepe y tengo veintitrés años. ¡No
soy tan viejo verdad!
semana a escuchar música y leer. Cocino mu bien y siempre preparo la cena. Me
Me llamo Ramón y tengo veinte años.
