The Future Tense
The Future
tense: it's the easiest of all the tenses to conjugate
The future
tense is used to express an action or state of being that will take place at
some time in the future.
Por ejemplo:
Lo
haré – I will
do it.
Iremos
al cine esta noche
– we will go to the cinema tonight.
As well as
conjugating the verb in the future tense, you can also use the verb ir to
create the future tense:
Lo haré (Voy a hacerlo)
Iremos al cine esta noche (vamos
a ir al cine esta noche)
Spaniards
use this form of future tense, so don’t worry about doing it this way.
In Spanish,
the future tense is also used for:
1. Conjecture regarding the
present:
a. ¿Qué hora sera? – I wonder what time it
is.
b. ¿Quién será a la
puerta? – Who
can that be at the door?
2.
Probability
regarding the present:
a. Serán las cinco – it is probably five
o’clock
b. Él tendrá muchos
amigos – he
must have many friends
c.
María estará
enferma – Maria must be sick
To form the
future tense take the whole of the verb (the infinitive) and add the following
endings:
Yo – é Tu – ás Él, ella, usted
– á
Nosotros – emos Vosotros – éis Ellos,
ellas, ustedes – án
The accents
are important because the stress will tell the listener that you’ve used the
future tense. Endings are the same for –er, -ar and –ir verbs. Let’s look at
the three verbs we’ve been using with our tenses guide: hablar, beber and
recibir.
Yo hablaré beberé recibiré
Tu hablarás beberás recibirás
Usted hablará beberá recibirá
Nos hablaremos beberemos recibiremos
Vos hablaréis beberéis recibiréis
Ustedes hablarán beberán recibirán
This rule
even works with our favourite irregulars – ir, ser and estar.
