Tengo Que Decirte Una Cosa – I Have to Tell You Something
Capítulo Uno, Parte Tres – Chapter One, Part Three
“Bueno,
bueno, (of course, bueno means good. Used like this
as an exclamation, it can also mean “well, well” or “hello!”. I’ve translated
this as “all right”) joven, no será para tanto …”
“All right young man, It won’t be that bad.”
“Le
digo que sí (literally “I tell you that yes”, we’d
translate this as “I tell you it is). Necesito
"I tell you it is. I need to be there before the plane leaves
for Buenos Aires."
“¿Se va usted a Argentina?”
"Are you going to Argentina?"
“No, yo no. Mi ex novia.
"No, not me. My ex girlfriend. But I have to tell her a very
important thing before she leaves."
The taxi driver pulls the toothpick out of his mouth and gives a wry
smile.
minutos.”
"Oh, now. Question of life or death, huh? Good, well, we are
going to on a shortcut that will save us at least forty minutes."
"You look well at what you do (I’ve translated this
literally, but I’m sure there’s a better idiom), I have to arrive on time."
“¿Y a tiempo, qué hora es?”
"And on time, what time is it?"
Si ella no
Miguel was thinking and is suddenly called to account. He did not
even know at what time the Amaya’s plane leaves! Was it at eight, at half past
eight, at nine? He is sure that she has told him, but he does not remember. He
decides to look it up on the internet while on the way to the airport. He pulls
out his mobile, looks at it, and realizes that the arrows on Amaya's WhatsApp
are still grey. She has not read the message yet! If she does not know that he
is at the airport or looks at the phone, the possibility of them meeting there
is quite remote.
"I do not know the exact time. But you pull off that shortcut,
and if we arrive on time you will earn a good tip."
“Usted tranquilo y déjeme a mí, joven.”
The taxi driver puts the toothpick back in his mouth. "You relax
and leave it to me, young man."
El taxi arranca. Miguel mira por la
ventanilla cómo empieza a amanecer. Son las 5.45 de la madrugada.
The taxi starts. Miguel looks out of the window at the beginning of
dawn. It's 5:45 in the morning.
