Ricky Martin says: Vente pa aca

This week's video, following considerable lobbying, is Ricky Martin.

Ricky Martin was born in Puerto Rica, but has lived in America and Spain. His home is now California (LA). He is a singer, actor and has written a number of books.

Enrique José Martín Morales (was born on Christmas Eve 1971), so he’s now 46 and his career started at the age of nine, appearing in Puerto Rican TV commercials. At the age of 12, he joined the boy band Menudo (can mean small or often) and was with them for nine years.

They were quite big in Latin America, but it was hard work and Martin left, aged 21, to pursue acting offers. He appeared in stage musicals in Mexico and in a telenovela about a band. The fictional band became reality and released a number of records and toured.

He moved to Los Angeles and appeared in the US soaps Getting By and General Hospital. In 1995, he refocused on his music career and his breakthrough to the English-language market came in 1999 when he performed La Copa de la Vida at the Grammy Awards. His first single was Livin La Vida Loca.

It was Martin’s success which paved the way for other Latin American singers such as Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Inglesias and Shakira.

Martin has continued to act – he appeared as Che in Evita on Broadway and in the US show Glee. He has been a coach on The Voice in Australia and in Mexico and launched his own-brand cosmetics in the US. You can buy Ricky’s lip balm.

The big question for many people was: is Ricky Martin gay? He had a long relationship with Mexican TV host Rebecca de Alba (pictured right) has a child with a surrogate mother and is now married to Jwan Yosef an artist. Martin has a huge gay following and also many female admirers.

I’ve chosen one of his more recent songs Vente Pa ‘ca with Columbian rapper Meludo. Vente pa acá means come here. Ven is the imperative informal “come” and Vente is a command: You come.

"Aquí " and "acá" both refer to a location near the speaker.
