Buenos días señores y señoras. Bienvenidos a la lección once de la clase de español.

Hoy tenemos un video de la serie Why Not Spanish. Ahora, estamos en la Unidad Cuatro de nuestro libro Sueños.

In this chapter we will learn how to say where a place is, talk about distances, also ask for and give directions.

Finding our way around:

Opción uno: mapas de Google

Opción dos: pide (pedir) un mapa

Opción tres: pregunta (preguntar) a una persona española

Todos ustedes saben cómo hacer la opción uno.

Opción dos:

¿Me puede dar un mapa de Barcelona por favor?

o

¿Tiene usted un mapa de Barcelona por favor?

o

¿Tiene un folleto sobre Barcelona por favor?

A folleto is a folded sheet. It's like asking for a pamphlet.

Opción dos: We now come to the difficult bit – asking a Spaniard!

Giving (and getting) directions:

Remember that we use the verb estar for places.

¿Dónde está? - where is?

Can you see it? Just point and say: “It's just over there.”

está allí nada más

está ahí nada más

esta allá

Yes, there are three ways to say “just over there” in Spanish. Don't get too

concerned about this – Lucy had to look it up. It started with me checking my

vocabulary. I said allí and Lucy said ahí. I asked what the difference was, so Lucy looked it up and (apparently) there are subtle differences.

I'm telling you this just for interest's sake. Don´t worry about remembering it all.

Está aquí nada más – it's just here

Está ahí nada más - just over there (a stone´s throw)

Está allí nada más – just over there (a bit further)

Está allá – it's over there (general direction)

You could also point and say: por allí or por ahí (that way).

I think the lesson here is stick with Lucy's first choice, which was ahí.

Let´s look at the instructions in our video.

a la derecha – to the right

a la izquierda – to the left

siga derecho – straight on, but easy to confuse with right, so instead learn todo recto – which also means straight on

gire a la derecha – turn to the right

gire a la izquierda – turn to the left

In Spain, people would often say “It is three streets from here”: está a tres calles de aquí. In Latin America, the instruction would be “it is three blocks from here”: está a tres cuadras de aquí.

Counting roads

La primera calle a la izquierda – first road on the left

La segunda calle a la derecha – second road on the right

La tercera calle – third road

I think we'll leave it there. Any more than three roads and it's getting a bit too
complicated!

Distances

No está muy lejos – it's not far away

Sí, está muy cerca – yes, it is very close

Es una caminata larga – it's a long walk (see how we switch to ser)

Está a cincuenta metros de aquí.

Está a cien metros de aquí.

Está a ciento cincuenta metros de aquí.

Está a doscientos metros de aquí.

Time

Está a solo cinco minutos de aquí.

Está a diez minutos a pie desde aquí.

Es una caminata larga, al menos veinte minutos

Positions:

Mira la página treinta y ocho:

al lado de – at the side of …

delante de – in front of …

enfrente de – opposite

detrás de – behind

entre – between

en la esquina – on the corner

a la vuelta de la esquina – around the corner

Here are some things you might find on your way:

La senda – footpath                   La carretera – road

La calle – street                         El paso subterráneo – underpass (subway)

la esquina – the corner               el cruce – crossroads or junction

los semáforos – traffic lights              el puente – bridge

el puente peatonal – footbridge           la plaza – square

la puerta – gateway                              el parking o el aparcamento – car park

And one very important question:

¿Dónde están los baños? o

¿Dónde están los servicios?

Learn these words and phrases, next week we will be directing an Ecuadorian around Peterborough.

For homework, translate the following:

1.     Disculpe ¿Hay una farmacia por aquí?
Sí, hay una farmacia ahí nada más. Mire, en la esquina, al lado del banco.

2.    ¿Puede ayudarme por favor, dónde está la estación de trenes?
Sí, no está muy lejos. Todo recto por esta calle, cruce la carretera y está a la izquierda. Aproximadamente diez minutos para caminando.

3.    Disculpe ¿hay un hotel cerca?
Sí, el más cercano está en Westgate. Gire a la izquierda aquí y la primera calle a la izquierda es Westgate. El Bull Hotel está a cien metros a la derecha. Hay una imagen de un toro afuera.

4.    ¿Puede ayudarme por favor, dónde puedo comprar gafas del sol?
Puede comprar gafas del sol en Boots, la farmacia. Gire a la izquierda aquí y
está cincuenta metros a la izquierda.

5.      Excuse me, is there a bank near here?
Yes, there is one just there and another on the corner in front of the
cathedral.

On a fresh sheet of paper, write the Spanish word for each of these. You must

include all accents and the definite article:

Pregunta uno: Uncle – el tío
