Buenos días señores y señoras. Bienvenidos a la lección ocho de la clase de español básico. Hoy, la fecha es siete de noviembre y sé que tenemos una cumpleañera. ¿Quién cumple años hoy?

Hoy vamos a ir a un restaurante dónde nadie habla inglés. Vamos a aprender a pedir comida en un restaurante español. Pero primero tenemos que revisar nuestra tarea y también Veronica y Polly nos dirán lo que han estado haciendo recientemente.

Verbs:

Comer – to eat Cenar – to dine Beber – to drink

Querer – to want Gustar – to like Tomar – to take

Tener – to have Servir – to serve Desear – to wish

Comidas:

El desayuno - breakfast

El almuerzo - lunch

La cena - dinner

Or should we just grab a sandwich? Sandwich is: una bocadillo o un emparedado.

Booking a table

Es el cumpleaños de la esposa de Eric. Va a llevarla a comer a Manuel's, el mejor restaurante de la ciudad.

Time to call to make a reservation.

Buenos días señor/a ¿Es ese el restaurante ___?

Hoy es el cumpleaños de mi esposa. ¿Tiene usted una mesa para dos esta noche?

Mi esposa prefiere comer temprano. Queremos una mesa a las siete y media por favor. Gracias señora, si llegamos a las siete, ¿podemos tomar cócteles?

Eric asked: ¿Tiene usted una mesa para dos esta noche?

He could have said:

Quisiera hacer una reservación para esta noche.

¿Puedo hacer una reservación para esta noche (tonight) o mañana por la noche (tomorrow night)?

If you just turn up at a restaurant (Latin American style) you can adapt the conversation to say:

Buenas noches ¿Tiene usted una mesa?

Buenas noches, quisiera una mesa para dos

If things are moving a little slowly, you might need to get the waiter's attention and say: Me puede traer el menú por favor. We live in modern times and you might also say: ¿Que es la contraseña del internet?

Hopefully the waiter will be attentive and ask:

¿Qué quiere usted? or ¿Qué desea? or ¿Puedo tomar su orden?

Diner 1: Para entrada, quisiera ensalada mixta y entonces chuleta de cordero poco hecho.

Diner 2: y para mi lo mismo, pero quisiera el cordero termino media por favor (or) y para mi, coctel de gambas seguido por codornices ajillo.

When he brings your food, the waiter may wish you: Buen provecho.

Later, he may ask:

¿Está todo bien? … Sí, está delicioso

¿Quiere, algo más? … No, gracias. He comido suficiente.

¿Les gustaría algún postre? … see above, or in my case: sí, gracias, me gustaría.

Special dietry requirements

• Soy vegetariano/a.¿Tiene platos vegetarianos?
• Soy vegano/a ¿Tiene platos veganos?
• Yo no como carne o no comemos carne.
• Soy alérgico/a a – I am allergic to … Use alérgico for a man and alérgica for a woman. Por ejemplo:
  

Soy alérgico a nueces (nuts)

Soy alérgico a maní (peanuts)

Soy alérgico a huevos (eggs)

• You may want to tell the waiter that someone else has an allergy. In that case, you would say:

Él/ella es alérgico a nueces or (por ejemplo) mi marido es alérgico a nueces.

• Someone may have a food intolerance (as opposed to an allergy). In that case, say:
  

Soy intolerante a la láctosa (dairy) – I am lactose intolerant

Mi marido no puede comer mariscos – my husband cannot eat seafood

Things you will find in a restaurant:

mesa – table camarero – waiter agua con gas – sparkling water

silla – chair mesero – waiter agua sin gas – still water

plata – plate camarera – waitress agua mineral

cuchillo – knife mesera – waitress gaseosa - pop

tenedor – fork copa – wine glass vino blanco - white wine

cuchara – spoon vaso – glass vino tinto – red wine

cerveza – beer té – tea café - coffee

Some useful terms

Frita - fried

A la plancha - cooked on a traditional thick iron plate, heated from underneath

Al horno - baked

Asado - roasted

Parrilla - flame grilled (broiled)

Rebozado - battered

Muy hecho - well cooked

Poco hecho - rare

Término medio – medium rare

Casero – home-made

Some common foods:

carne – meat (probably beef) pollo - chicken

cerdo – pork jamon – ham (iberica is the expensive one, also

cordero – lamb serrano and york).

tocino – bacon queso – cheese huevos – eggs

atún – tuna tomates - tomatoes

sardinas – sardines anchoas - anchovies

gambas – prawns langosta - lobster

pulpo – octopus calamar – squid

mariscos – seafood ostra – oyster mejillones – mussels

pasta – pasta paella salchica – sausage

chorizo – spicy sausage salsa – sauce

vegetales – vegetables verduras – greens legumbres - pulses

hamburguesa or burguesa - burger

Huevos (eggs) come in a number of ways:

Huevos a la copa are boiled eggs and you may ask for them duro (hard) or tibio (soft). Huevos revueltos are scrambled, a tortilla is an omelette and huevos fritas are fried eggs. A poached egg is huevo escalfado, but Lucy says she has never in her life eaten a poached egg.

I want another …

Quiero otro café por favor – I want another coffee please.

No need to say un otro. Otro means another. If the item you want is feminine, say quiero otra …

¿Quisiera la cuenta, por favor? – could I have the bill please?

 

¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? o ¿puedo pagar con tarjeta de crédito? – can I pay by card

No, debe pagar en efectivo – no you have to pay in cash

Pagaré en efectivo – I will pay in cash
