Grupo Básico Español – lección dieciséis

Buenos días a todos. Bienvenidos a la lección dieciséis de la clase de español.

Last week (la semana pasada) we started Chapter Six of Sueños and learned to talk about our daily routine and at what time (a qué hora) we do things. Today, we will finish the chapter with a look at some bits we didn't cover and a little revision.

Sueños is quite old fashioned and, as we discovered last week, no-one sweeps the floor any more, we all have cordless vacuum cleaners. It seems el cepillo (brush) o el barrer (broom) and the verb barrer (to sweep) are becoming redundant.

A vacuum cleaner is Spanish is una aspiradora and a cordless vacuum cleaner (should you ever want to buy one in Spain) is la aspiradora sin cuerda. The verb aspirar means to inhale and has been adapted for modern use to mean to vacuum.

I vacuum the floor – aspiro el piso

My husband vacuums the floor – mi marido aspira el piso

I’m going to do the vacuuming - voy a aspirar

What does this mean? Mi hijo adolescente nunca aspira el piso

Verb Conjugation Exercise

1.    Yo leo el periódico todos los días – I read the newspaper every day

2.    Mi mujer prefiere leer una revista – my wife prefers to read a magazine. This is a trick question. You need to leave the verb in the infinitive as it follows another verb – preferer.

3.    ¿Bebes vino tinto o vino blanco? - do you drink red or white wine? Bebe would also be correct if you were the waiter.

4.    Yo solo bebo vino tinto – I drink only red wine

5.    Cada domingo, my mujer habla con su madre por teléfono – every Sunday my wife speaks to her mother on the phone.

6.    Yo hablo a mi madre dos veces a la semana – I speak to my mother twice a week

7.    Yo escribo una carta a mi hija cada mes – I write a letter to my daughter each month

8.    Nos escribimos el uno al otro dos veces al año - we write to each other twice a year. What would it mean if I said: Nos escribimos el uno al otro dos veces al año en nuestros cumpleaños y en navidad.

9.    Ella come chocolate dos veces al día – she eats chocolate twice a day

10. Ellos no comen chocolate – they do not eat chocolate

Her ex-boyfriend is a mug. Su exnovio es un bobo.

I can't stand looking at her mug. No soporto verle la jeta.

Someone mugged her at midnight. Alguien la asaltó a medianoche. (Asaltar regular -ar verb)

Translate these questions:

1. At what time do you get up each morning?

3. How often do you go shopping?

Now I will ask five questions using reflexive verbs. I want you to answer using the correct form of the verb. We’ll use the informal.

4. ¿Te maquillas antes del desayuno?
5. ¿Te acuestas más tarde el fin de semana?

Possible answers:

1. Normalmente, me levanto a las seis.

Telling the time.

Everyone has a slip of paper with a time on it. We will work in pairs. The first person is going to ask the other what time it is, the second person will answer and the first person will tell us the time in English.

Remember, to ask the time, say: ¿qué hora es?

To tell someone the time, say: son las …… o es …..
