Baila Me by the Gipsy Kings

This week, the video was the Gipsy Kings – Los Reyes Gitanos – playing Baila Me. I wondered whether we should do this one because the Gipsy Kings sing in Andalusian Spanish so there are some odd words and the translation is difficult.

In the end, I thought we should look at it. There are many forms of Spanish and, if you travel through Spain, you will spot quite significant regional changes in the language. This is a good illustration of that. Of course, if you’re travelling to Mexico or South America, there are still more differences.
Baila is the tu imperative form of the verb bailar, so the lyric is an instruction to dance. Sei is a form of Ser, Qui is Quien and Esta is shortened to ‘ta to make it scan. The Maria Dolores referred to in the first line is Maria Dolores Pradera and she will be our featured song next week.
Andalusian Spanish has influences from Catalan and Occitan. The Gipsy Kings are the sons of gipsy refugees who fled from Catalonia to France during the Spanish Civil War. The band formed in the 1970s and they are still going today, but with only two of the original line-up. They play pop-oriented flamenco.
Let’s see the video. Baila Me was released in 1991. This is the official video.

Dance For Me

When I met Maria Dolores
That is when I got lovesick
When I felt bad by her side
That's when I went to the doctor
(2xs)

Dance Dance Dance Dance
Dance Dance Dance for me
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing
But I will always sing
But I will always sing
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing

When I met Maria Dolores
That is when I got lovesick
When I felt bad by her side
That's when I went to the doctor
(2xs)

Dance Dance Dance Dance
Dance Dance Dance for me
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing
But I will always sing
But I will always sing
This rumba to this gypsy girl
It's what I will always sing

I only live to love you
I only live to love you
I fell in love with this gypsy girl
Who has already started dancing

Dance Dance Dance Dance
Dance Dance Dance for me
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing
But I will always sing
But I will always sing
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing

Dance Dance Dance Dance
Dance Dance Dance for me
This rumba to this gypsy girl
That I will always sing
But I will always sing
But I will always sing
This rumba to the gypsy girl
That I will always sing
But I will always sing
But I will always sing
This rumba to this gypsy girl
It's what I will always sing
